The City of Townsville is an Australian local government area (LGA) located in North Queensland, Australia. It encompasses the city of Townsville, together with the surrounding rural areas, to the south are the communities of Alligator Creek, Woodstock and Reid River, and to the north are Northern Beaches and Paluma, and also included is Magnetic Island. Townsville is considered to be the capital of North Queensland.

The LEIP is positioned to become Australia’s first environmentally sustainable advanced manufacturing, technology and

processing hub. Located approximately 40 kilometres south of the Townsville Central Business District, within the suburb

of Calcium, the LEIP comprises an area of approximately 2,200 hectares, extending east from the Mingela State Forest

and Lansdown Creek to the Flinders Highway.

TCC acquired the land for the LEIP in 2001. The land was previously owned by the Commonwealth Scientific and

Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), where it was used as a pasture research site.

The LEIP is intended to be developed over the next 20 years and is forecast to support more than 5,000 construction jobs,

around 1,600 initial jobs and more than 9,100 indirect jobs.

The LEIP is supported by:

*Road and rail connections (national highway network, major rail links);

*Easy access to the Port of Townsville and Townsville Airport for interstate shipping and international export;

*A broad and strong local economy, consistent population growth, and skilled and specialist labour;

*Access to world-class tertiary education and research facilities to advance knowledge and skills;

*Tertiary hospital and health services; and,

*A broad range of public and private schooling options.
